U.S. Mission Saudi Arabia PAS Small Grants, Riyadh and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: October 2021-July 2022

A fellowship from the US Mission Saudi Arabia/US Department of State to fund research and travel to Saudi Arabia to conduct a needs assessment of the Kingdom’s independent music scene. I also organized a concert of Saudi musicians and academic conference on Saudi music—both in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. 

International Scientific Twinning Program Fellowship, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: January 2013-January 2014

The twelve-month fellowship from the International Scientific Twinning Program in cooperation with Middle Tennessee State University funded research for a book project on Saudi Arabia’s history and politics. 

Fulbright Fellowship, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: September 2010-December 2011
The fellowship funded research for a book project on the influence of Islamic Modernism on Muslims in Southeast Asia from 1875 until 2012.

East Asia & the Pacific Bureau Travel Grant, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia: November 2011
The grant funded the costs of travel to Wellington, New Zealand, where I gave a talk to Victoria University Wellington on the Arab Spring and the signer Maher Zain.

Fulbright ASEAN Travel Grant, Kula Lumpur, Malaysia: June 2011
The grant funded the costs of travel to Indonesia to deliver talks and meet with scholars at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta (Ciputat, South Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia) and Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta, Indonesia).

MTSU Funding for Liberal Arts Grant-Writers (FLAG Grant): Summer 2009
The grant covered the cost of applying for a 2010-2011 Fulbright grant in Southeast Asia.

MTSU Faculty Research/Creative Projects Committee Summer Grant: June 2009-August 2009
The grant funded research and writing for the monograph, Shaykh Khalid and Modern Islam: A Critical Study of the Foundations of Contemporary Islamic Thought.

MTSU Faculty Research/Creative Projects Committee Summer Grant: June 2008-August 2008
The grant funded research and writing for the monograph, The Arab Gulf States: Beyond Oil and Islam.

Smith Richardson Foundation Junior Faculty Research Grant: June 2007-December 2010
The grant funded research and writing for the monograph, The Arab Gulf States: Beyond Oil and Islam.  The grant also provided funds for summer teaching salary in 2007, multiple research trips, promotion of the completed book, and a reduction of teaching responsibilities for the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters.

Fulbright-Hays Fellowship, Damascus, Syria and Istanbul, Turkey: October 2002-December 2003
The fellowship funded dissertation research.  During the grant, I also delivered a lecture in Arabic at Damascus University on Muslims’ influence on American history, gave a lecture in Arabic on the U.S. system of higher education, and participated in US-Syrian student dialogues at Damascus University.

Fulbright IIE Fellowship, Damascus, Syria: January 2002-July 2002
The fellowship funded dissertation research and intensive Arabic coursework at the French Institute for the Teaching of Arabic in Damascus (IFEAD).
